December 2001 - Special Holiday Presentations The holiday season is a time to celebrate with friends, family, and colleagues. Our activities this month can be printed as presentations to special people in your lives. Our first activity, A Gift of Time, can be presented to family and loved ones. Offer your services to family this holiday season! Our second activity, Shining Your Light, can be presented to those who have volunteered their services in your classroom during the year, 2001. June 2001 - Father's Day A special day in June is Father's Day, so we thought you would like a gift to present to your Dad. May 2001 - Special Days in May In keeping with the themes of this month's newsletter, we thought you would like a gift to present to your mother or your teacher. March 2001 - Hangman In keeping with the Irish theme of the March Newsletter, we invite you and your students to attempt our Hangman Activity. February 2001 - Personality Preferences One of many support materials that will be offered, in conjunction with the Vital Knowledge PET Project on Learning Styles, will be lesson plans on personality preferences that can be incorporated into the regular curriculum. January 2001 - "Excelling" as a Volunteer During January, the beginning of the International Year of Volunteers, discuss with your students ideas about how they can become involved in a voluntary activity that will make a difference in your community. Perhaps you will want to begin a fund raising campaign for a community organization. If so, use some of your math periods this month to teach basic operations involved with budgeting through the use of a spreadsheet. Sample Activity #1: As the executor of the will of your wealthy great uncle, you are responsible for doling out $1,000,000.00 to community organizations that rely upon the work of volunteers. According to the will, at least 10 organizations must benefit from the inheritance. It is with this in mind that you have researched the International Year of Volunteers web site found at: http://www.iyv2001.org/cfapps/queries/partner/auto_partner1.htm You have decided to contribute $100,000 of your uncle's money to 10 organizations listed at this site. Upon the completion of your research, view the spreadsheet that shows the other members of your uncle's family where his money was spent. Now you must prepare a document to explain why each of the organizations listed in your spreadsheet is worthy of receiving the money that your uncle has left. Suggestions:
