February 2001 - Personality Preferences

One of many support materials that will be offered, in conjunction with the Vital Knowledge PET Project on Learning Styles, will be lesson plans on personality preferences that can be incorporated into the regular curriculum. The following activity is an example of the types of lessons that have already been developed.

Purpose:
To increase self-awareness and understanding of personality preferences by encouraging students to become aware of the different functions that influence their personal development.

Curriculum Connection:
Language Arts

Time:
45 minutes

Directions:

  • Class Introduction:
    • Model the process of generating metaphors with your class. “Think about life.”
      • Life is…
        • a picnic
        • a journey
        • a bowl of kiwi fruit
    • Think about love.
      • Love is…
        • a safe harbor in a storm.
        • a ball and chain.
        • a feast.

  • Group Processing:
    • Encourage students to break into small groups where they can record their own metaphors on flip chart paper.
    • When the larger group reconvenes, have a group spokesperson share examples of metaphors that have been recorded.

  • Individual Follow-up:
    • Write as many metaphors as you can about the functions that influence your personality:
      • Thinking is…
        • creating a path through the woods.
        • sailing on a clear stream.
      • Feeling is…
        • a flood of emotions.
        • watching a red sunset.
      • Sensing is…
        • an all day shopping trip.
        • an antique car show.
      • Intuition is…
        • wanting to eat the whole cake.
        • a glimpse of light at the end of the tunnel.

  • Partnerships (or Triads):
    • Choose the function that most interests you. Match yourself with a partner (or partners) who has chosen the same function. Then discuss your metaphors based on the following questions:
      • What are the characteristics of the object or activity named in the metaphor?
      • How are these characteristics relevant to the function named?
(For example: “…sailing a on a clear stream” is relevant to thinking because it relates to “being quick”, “seeing through to the bottom of things”, and “getting somewhere”.

  • Feedback:
  • Have each student pass in the accompanying chart at the end of the class.

January 2001 - "Excelling" as a Volunteer

During January, the beginning of the International Year of Volunteers, discuss with your students ideas about how they can become involved in a voluntary activity that will make a difference in your community. Perhaps you will want to begin a fund raising campaign for a community organization. If so, use some of your math periods this month to teach basic operations involved with budgeting through the use of a spreadsheet.

Sample Activity #1:

As the executor of the will of your wealthy great uncle, you are responsible for doling out $1,000,000.00 to community organizations that rely upon the work of volunteers. According to the will, at least 10 organizations must benefit from the inheritance. It is with this in mind that you have researched the International Year of Volunteers web site found at: http://www.iyv2001.org/cfapps/queries/partner/auto_partner1.htm

You have decided to contribute $100,000 of your uncle's money to 10 organizations listed at this site. Upon the completion of your research, view the spreadsheet that shows the other members of your uncle's family where his money was spent.

Now you must prepare a document to explain why each of the organizations listed in your spreadsheet is worthy of receiving the money that your uncle has left.

Suggestions:

  • Have students determine their own local voluntary organizations to whom they would dispense the $1,000,000.000. Encourage them to do some research on the organizations by ensuring that they justify why each one has been chosen.
  • Begin your own fund raising campaign with your students. Use a spreadsheet to keep track of the money raised.
